What To Do In The First Hour
System A Patient’s Guide

The first hour after a serious injury decides much of what follows. Here is what helps, and what to avoid, before you reach hospital.
Road accidents, falls and burns are the most common emergencies we receive at Narayan Hospital. In almost every case, what happens before the patient reaches us matters as much as what we do afterwards. Bleeding that is controlled early, a spine that is not twisted during the lift, and a phone call that lets the theatre prepare in advance — these are what change outcomes. This is what our emergency team would tell any family in Gorakhpur.

What To Do While You Wait For Help

Keep it simple. Call for help, stop obvious bleeding with firm pressure, keep the person warm and still, and do not give anything to eat or drink in case surgery is needed. Ring the hospital on the way so the emergency room, and if needed the operation theatre, are ready before you arrive.
Call for an ambulance first
Call +91 94153 32396 before you set off. Our ambulance runs 24 hours, and even if you are bringing the patient yourself, that call lets us prepare. Tell us what happened, roughly how old the patient is, and whether they are conscious — that is enough for us to get the right team waiting.
Do not move a head or spine injury
If there has been a blow to the head, a fall from height, or the patient cannot feel their legs, do not sit them up or carry them by the shoulders and knees. Support the head and neck in line with the body and move them flat. A spine injury that is handled badly in the first ten minutes can become permanent.

"In trauma, the first hour is not about doing everything — it is about doing the few right things quickly."
